In July, we held a second core group meeting, at which we discussed two critical papers developed principally by Filipa and Valerie: a research design document and a field research guide.  These documents were designed to elaborate on the claims that exist regarding the causal connections between transitional justice mechanisms and different elements of democracy, and to flesh out in particular the possible pathways of effects often left implicit in these discussions. In addition, these documents suggest ways to investigate if differences in the institutional design and implementation of specific transitional justice measures may explain differences in transitional justice impact. They also are designed to shape research in the field, to ensure that pre-primary research identifies the gaps in knowledge for particular countries and that field research interviews are best targeted to address those gaps.
