In August 2013, TJDI’s Chandra Sriram conducted interviews and held informal discussions with government officials, NGO experts and academics in Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia.  She also presented the work of the project to local and international audiences.  She gave a talk at the Fundação Casa Rui Barbosa in Rio de Janeiro on “Justiça Transitória e Construção de Instituições Democráticas: uma investigação de trajetória” for more on the talk see:

Prof. Sriram also attended the conference of the Latin American Society of International Law in Foz do Iguacu, where she was invited to present on the work of the TJDI project to scholars and practitioners from the region. While fieldwork and analysis is ongoing, a number of interesting preliminary observations arose.  First, the degree to which the 1979 amnesty law and its appropriate interpretation and effects continue to be disputed, including the degree to which it either embedded impunity or enabled the return of the exiled and greater political participation. Second, the degree to which reparations measures, both their existence and modes of delivery, continue to be contested.
